Identifying Cleanfill / Hardfill

In the context of waste management and construction in New Zealand, “cleanfill” and “hardfill” refer to different types of materials and their uses:

  • Cleanfill

– Definition: Cleanfill consists of inert, uncontaminated material that does not contain any recyclable materials, hazardous substances, or organic matter. Typically, cleanfill includes soil, clay, gravel, and crushed concrete that is free from any contaminants.

– Purpose: Cleanfill is primarily used for land reclamation, filling in low-lying areas, and as a base material in construction projects. It is often used to raise the level of ground to build on or to provide a stable foundation for structures.

– Environmental Considerations: Because cleanfill is free from contaminants, it can be safely disposed of in designated cleanfill sites without harming the environment.

  • Hardfill

– Definition: Hardfill is a type of fill material that is made up of hard, durable materials, which may include concrete, bricks, asphalt, and other construction debris, as well as some other inert materials. Unlike cleanfill, hardfill can sometimes contain small amounts of other materials as long as they are non-hazardous.

– Purpose: Hardfill is often used for filling potholes, creating bases for roads, and other construction activities where strength and stability are required. It provides a solid foundation for building works and helps improve drainage.

– Environmental Considerations: While hardfill should be non-hazardous, it may not be accepted in cleanfill sites depending on local regulations. It’s important to ensure that it is disposed of properly, typically at hardfill disposal sites.
